Abstract

The article compares the retrospective national bibliography VD16 with similar European enterprises. After presenting the content and the editorial principles of the database, the author seeks to solicit the contribution of new bibliographical records while encouraging a wider use of the VD 1 6 number as a unique identifier. Since a decisive role is played by the digitization projects which are based on VD 1 6, the article describes the cataloguing aspects of the broad, VD16-based digitization projects at the Bavarian State Library as well as their effects on information dissemination regarding those digital copies. Furthermore, the role ofVD 1 6 in achieving a coordinated digitization of all German imprints dating from the 16 th century is presented.
