Abstract
Their discovery marks the dawn of the interferon/cy-tokine field. When Isaacs and Lindenmann were looking into theirinterferon produced in chicken chorioallantoic membranes in re-sponse to inactivated influenza virus in England, another scien-tist, Yasuichi Nagano (Fig. 1), was coming very close to andtouching interferon on the other side of the globe. In 1954, Naganoand his lifelong collaborator, Yasuhiko Kojima (Fig. 2), observedantiviral activity in rabbit skin after injection of inactivated vac-cinia virus in their laboratory in Japan.
