Abstract

Respected music professor and pianist Jesse C. McCarroll presents an overview of his multicultural journey, sharing some of his challenges and high points in a fascinating career. His writing offers a look at an important part of the history of Music Educators National Conference and the National Association for Music Education and points the way forward for music educators in a time of religious, ethnic, and cultural conflicts: We need more than tolerance of differences—we need to understand each other, and becoming acquainted with diverse musical cultures offers a step in this direction.
