Abstract

According to mythology Pandora was created by Vulcan at Jupiter's command to punish mankind for Prometheus' theft of fire from the gods. Although the gods had admonished her never to open a box she had been given, Pandora could not contain her curiosity, and she momentarily raised the lid. In that brief instant all the world's sins, vices and diseases are said to have escaped.
