Abstract

Stern, Stein, and Bloom (1956) have suggested that individuals exhibiting authoritarian tendencies would demonstrate preference for college majors in non-abstract, practical areas such as engineering, business, and law and non-authoritarian individuals would prefer abstract majors such as the humanities and social sciences. Previous research (Greenberg & Fare, 1959; Martoccia, 1964; Hanson. 1967) has generally supported the hypothesis. To test the hypothesis further, the California F-Scale (Adorno, et d., 1950) was given to 220 males and 198 females enrolled at Tennessee Technological University. Lower division students (freshman and sophomores) and upper division students (juniors and seniors) were categorized according to academic major. Table 1 shows a summary of the number of Ss and the means and standard deviations of the F-Scale scores by major ' and division.
