Abstract

Anopheles culicifacies sensu lato,is a complex including five isomorphic sibling species, namely A,B,C,D and E,and except species B,all other members are regarded as malaria vector.An.culicifacies has an extensive distribution from Ethiopia eastward into India and South China. In some areas of South Asia,An.culicifacies is dominant anopheline mosquito species and responsible for most of malaria cases in those locations.Through polytene chromosome examination and polymerase chain reaction(PCR)assay,we can identify all the members of An.culicifacies complex. This article summarized the recently published surveys on the bionomics and the role of An.culicifacies in transmitting malaria and other relative issues.Furthermore, this review presented following information:(1)Up-to-date data on the main malaria vectors involving An.culicifacies s.l.,(2)studies on the geographical distribution, bionomics and ecological features of immature as well as adult stages, and on the vectorial capacity of each sibling species,(3)issues of vector control relating to An.culicifacies complex,(4)prospect into the research of An.culicifacies. Key words: Anopheles culicifacies s.l.; Sibling species; Geographical distribution; Ecology; Malaria transmission
