Abstract

Small handles on the string world-sheet can contribute to the anomalous dimension of an operator. Most operators which are Weyl invariant at string tree level acquire anomalous dependence on the Liouville mode of the metric from string loops. Such operators cannot be used as vertex operators for states of the string without being modified. This is the two-dimensional manifestation of mass renormalization in string perturbation theory.
