Abstract

A theoretical study is made of the features of the band structure and orbital magnetic susceptibility χ of the intermetallic compounds CaPb3 and YbPb3. It is shown that the anomalous, strongly temperature-dependent diamagnetism observed earlier in experiments on these compounds is of an interband origin and is due to the presence of degenerate electronic states in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level. The characteristics of the degenerate states for the two compounds are determined by reconciling the calculated χ(T) dependence with experiment in the temperature range 5 K⩽T⩽300 K.
