Abstract

161Dy Mössbauer spectroscopy on Y diluted compounds Dy 1− x Y x B 2C 2 was carried out in order to investigate frustration effects between the antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions. The magnetic hyperfine field anomalously depends on the Y concentration. This behavior resembles that of spontaneous magnetization observed in these compounds which has been supposed to originate from the change of canting angle of Dy moment. The present results reveal that the Dy moment changes its magnitude due to a change in frustration between the AFQ and AFM interactions by the Y substitution.
