Abstract

The sound velocity V s is measured to investigate the relation between the recently observed long-range magnetic order and superconductivity in La 2CuO 4+ δ , which reportedly appear in the same temperature range. The sharp minimum of V s for the longitudinal C 11 mode is observed around T c∼ 36 K. This anomaly appears at the same temperature when the superconductivity is suppressed by the magnetic field. This result indicates that the anomalous change of V s accompanies the appearance not of the superconductivity but of the magnetic order.
