Abstract

An overview of the recent studies of Balmer line shapes in a hollow cathode glow discharges operated with hydrogen isotopes, water vapour, methane and their mixtures with argon and other inert gases is presented. The multi‐component Gaussian structure of experimental lineshape is discussed in detail. The narrowest and medium width Gaussian are related to dissociative excitation and dissociative ionization and excitation of hydrogen containing molecules, respectively. The largest width Gaussian is related to excessive Doppler broadening well described by so called “collision model”. This model is used to explain differences in half widths of excessively broadened part of line profile for various hollow cathode voltages, cathode materials and cathode temperature effect.
