Abstract

Abstract Anodic polarization behavior of pure nickel and five binary Ni-Al alloys (containing 2 to 14 wt % Al) in hydrogen saturated sulfuric acids was investigated at 22 (± 1) C (71.6 F) using a potentiostatic technique. All specimens exhibited active, passive and transpassive behavior in all acids tested. Tafel slopes for anodic dissolution in the active region varied from 0.040 to 0.085 volt/decade. Tafel slopes varied from 0.130 to 0.265 volt/decade in the early transpassive region, and from 0.100 to 0.200 volt/decade in the region of oxygen evolution. Corrosion potentials for all specimens were linear functions of pH for the pH range +1.19 to −0.42. Values of dEcorr/dpH varied from −0.030 to −0.059. Ecorr(Ecorr at pH = 0) for the alloys ranged from −0.250 to −0.280 volt vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Passive current densities varied from 0.010 to 1.21 ma/cm2. All alloys exhibited two distinct current density peaks in 1N H2SO4. The first peak was attributed to pseudo passivation of the αNi soli...
