Abstract

The anodic oxidation of ethylene on smooth Au electrodes was studied in aqueous solutions at 80°C. Effects of potential, ethylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the current were measured. The reaction product in acidic solutions (pH < 1.4) was acetaldehyde and the kinetic parameters were consistent with the mechanism involving carbonium-ion formation as proposed by Dahms and Bockris. Limiting cds approximately two orders of magnitude less than those in acid media were obtained in alkaline solutions. An electro-oxidation involving water and/or OH − is proposed for these latter solutions.
