Abstract

Anodic oxidation of thianthrene in 80% (v/v) acetic acid-water mixtures containing HClO 4 at 1·15 V vs Ag/AgCl sat'd. KCl (approx. 1·10 V vs sce) gives the monoxide in near quantitative yield. At 1·6 V, thianthrene and its monoxide give a mixture of products consisting of 44% cis-, 28% trans-dioxide, 13% sulphone, 10% trioxide and 5% tetroxide.
