More information is available at http://www.evolution05.uaf.edu/.Second Annual Science and Engineering Visualization ChallengeTo recognize and to encourage visualization in the communication of science, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are cosponsoring the second annual Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge. This international contest is designed to recognize outstanding achievements by scientists, engineers, visualization specialists, and artists in the use of visual media to promote understanding of research results and scientific phenomena. The winners (one for each category) will be published in a special section of the September 23, 2005, issue of the journal Science and Science Online. The NSF will publish the winners on its website as well. Awards categories are photographs/still images (film or digital photographs and photomicrographs, as well as images obtained from electron microscopes, STMs, AFMs, telescopes, and similar instruments), illustrations (traditional or computer‐assisted illustrations or drawings produced to conceptualize the unseen, recreate an object, process or phenomenon), informational/explanatory graphics (graphics that are more explanatory by nature and rely heavily on data to convey a message), interactive media (movies or animations), and noninteractive media (movies or animations that play automatically) produced or commissioned by illustrators, scientists, or engineers—individually or in teams—January 1, 2003, through December 31, 2004. In addition to contributed oral and poster presentations covering all aspects of mammalian biology, this year's program will feature “Adaptive Evolution in Mammalian Populations,” a symposium convened by Drs. Hopi Hoekstra and Jay Storz and “Careers in Mammalogy,” a workshop led by Drs. Deidre Parish and Greg Wilson. Special addresses will be offered by the recipients of the Joseph Grinnell (Norman A. Slade) and C. Hart Merriam (O. J. Reichman) awards, as well as by student honorees. Our capstone speaker will be announced at a later date. Also included are the usual ASM socials, ideal for professional interaction.
