Abstract

Background: Open - heart surgery is an intensive treatment, helping to relieve symptoms, reduce drug therapy, prolong life and increase quality of life for patients with cardiovascular disease. Research on patient anxiety helps nurses focus more on mental care before and after surgery for patients.
 Method: Cross-sectional description on 222 patients having open heart surgery during August to December 2022 at Hanoi Heart Hospital.
 Results: The average score of anxiety scale before surgery is 6.23 (±4.08), after surgery is 2.79 (±2.61); There were 96 patients (43.2 %) patients with signs and symptoms of anxiety before surgery, 19 people (8.6%) patients with anxiety after surgery. The main problems patients worry about before surgery are waiting time for surgery (62.2%), then it is likely to be delayed (32.4%), uncomfortable hospital environment (30.6%). and some other anxieties such as pain after surgery (28.4%), unsuccessful surgery (23.0%), failure to wake up after anesthesia (14.9%), or bad effects from errors in surgery ( 11.7%). Concerns about the care of loved ones and the care of health workers are low at less than 5%. Gender, age, duration of illness, influence from people around and ability to pay were the main factors related to patient's anxiety (p<0.05).
 Conclusion: Patients before and after surgery have anxiety, health workers must find out their worries and thoughts to encourage and support mental as well as physical to improve their mental health to help patients recover quickly.
