Abstract

During the next few years, the Blanton-Peale Institute will be compiling an Encyclopedia of Psychology and Religion under the direction of the Institute's President, Dr. Holly Harrison Johnson, its Vice president for Academic Af fairs, Dr. Walter Odajnyk, its Publications Director, Dr. David A. Leeming, and a board of distinguished advisors. The book will be published by The Continuum International Publishing Group. The purpose of the Encyclopedia is to provide a definitive and intellectually rigorous collection of psychological interpretations of the stories, rituals, mo tifs, symbols, dogmas, and experiences of the world's religious and mythological traditions. While there are dictionaries and encyclopedias of Religion and sev eral encyclopedias of Psychology, there is no comprehensive encyclopedia that integrates Psychology and Religion in the context of current intellectual devel opments in the social/behavioral sciences. Blanton-Peale's single volume Ency clopedia will serve as a valuable "user-friendly" reference book for libraries and for the general reader, and it will be of particular use to the growing community of teachers, clergy, therapists, and counselors, who are the real opinion leaders in the developing r?int?gration of Religion and Psychology. Perhaps the most important connection between Religion and Psychology is the fact that both are therapeutic by nature, both dedicated to inner health.
