Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article considers the highly successful French translation of Canadian author Ann-Marie MacDonald’s novel, Fall on Your Knees. Translated by Quebeckers Lori Saint-Martin and Paul Gagne, Un parfum de cedre was a best-seller in both France and Quebec. However, as this article will illustrate, striking a balance between the Canadian origins of the author, novel and translators and the expectations of the French publisher and reading public was a challenge that raises interesting questions about the horizons of expectations of the two readerships. The author first considers theoretical questions related to the position of translated works in theories of aesthetic response and then focuses on specific examples from this novel.
