Abstract

(YSmLuCa) 3(FeGe) 5O 12 epitaxial films, grown by LPE, are annealed in different oxygen partial pressure environments. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant K u is rapidly reduced at 980°C by annealing in O 2 gas. However, no reduction in K u is observed by annealing in N 2 gas. The K u reduction rate increases as the annealing oxygen partial pressure becomes higher. The activation energy of K u reduction is 1.88 × 10 4 cal/mol. Small increases and decreases in saturation magnetization 4π M s are observed by annealing in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. Dodecahedral site cations and oxygen vacancies form vacancy pairs with each other. The climbing motion of the vacancy pairs, from the film interior to the surface promotes dodecahedral site ion diffusion. Consequently, K u is reduced.
