Abstract

The formation of a supersaturated solid solution and its decomposition behaviour on subsequent annealing in vapour-deposited Al-2wt.%Rh thin films were studied by transmission electron microscopy and diffraction techniques. The supersaturated solid solution was found to be stable up to about 700 K. On annealing at higher temperatures, an intermediate phase of monoclinic structure with a = 1.636 nm, b = 0.805 nm, c = 1.279 nm and β = 107.77° precipitated out. Details of the microstructure and the transformation behaviour on annealing are discussed.
