Abstract

Typical German speaking radio news with comprise several subgenres of text which are presented within one news broadcasting show next to each other. Accordingly different speaking modes can be described for these genres, carried out by news presenters and reporters/rapporteurs. This chapter provides an analysis of the speaking modes of news bulletin and following reports and the bridging passage (,'Anmoderation/Uberleitung/ Antext') between them. The data-set of 28 recordings (14 male/ 14 female speakers) containing the succesion of three subgrenres was allocated in the Nachrichten-Arche a collection of German radio news broadcasts (Schwiesau et al. 2011). Specifically the form-function relation of these speaking modes is investigated by means of a structural analysis and an analysis of global prosodic parameters like mean f0, intensity and speaking rate. Only male speakers employ significantly lower mean f0 in connecting transition with respect to preceding bulletins, whereas speakers of both genders show also significantly lower speaking rates for transitions. These results suggest a cut-off function of the transitioning passage where speakers try to separate the two genres as much as appropriate.
