Abstract

The aim of analyzing the social and economic aspects of the Association of Autonomous and Related Seafood Producers Los Isleños of the Puerto Bolívar (Machala-Ecuador), a database was generated with information on fishing activity. Consequently, a survey was applied to the members to determine the main socioeconomic characteristics. The main economic activity is the collection of shells, but its income is reduced by selling to intermediary traders, added to this the few areas that remain of the mangrove ecosystem and the little control that the authorities exercise in the marketing of this product. This research highlights the weaknesses of the Association, which with a little training could improve the commercialization of its product and thus improve the quality of life of its members and their families.
