Abstract

Given the scarcity (absence?) of studies of speech in Spanishspeaking persons with hereditary ataxia, this study was made of recordings from 35 persons, 32 with FriedreichÕs disease and 3 with olivo-ponto-cerebellar disease, from different areas of Spain. Perceptual analysis was used to individualize segmental and prosodic characteristics of their oral-verbal-linguistic output in spontaneous speech and reading tasks. Findings on the presence of phonological processes and systematized speech are noted that should be targeted for speech therapy interventions. Likewise, we were able to define more precisely one of the signs of cerebellar deterioration: scanning speech.
