Abstract

It was tested the magnetometric method efficiency to detect buried pipes and comparing the results with those obtained with the electromagnetic method of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). It was also made GPR data acquisition on areas where the pipe line crosses one river analyzing its ability to detect the tubes at different distances of the river’s border and also over the river. Among the studied areas on Sergipe, Bahia and Espirito Santo States there are: (1) at Rio Una, where we acquired five (5) magnetometric profiles at different distances of the river (0, 10, 20, 30 and 50 meters) using a magnetic measurement interval of one (1,0) meter over each profile, and it was also performed one GPR acquisition, which follows the same profiles using antennae of 100 and 200 MHz, making a scan measurement at each 0,1 meter; (2) another area studied with GPR is the crossing point of TRANSPETRO’s pipeline with Rio Catana; (3) and also the crossing point of TRANSPETRO’s pipeline with Rio Pirapama. As a conclusion we can easily see that the GPR is very useful to locate and calculate the depth of the buried pipes but the proximity with the river usually decreases its ability to detect the tubes. The combination of GPR with the magnetic method increase the success to detect the tubes of the pipeline.
