Abstract
This work aims to reflect about the relation between the performance in the essay test in the university entrance examination and the quotas system implemented in 2009 at the Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Parana – Unioeste. The purpose of the analysis of these essays was to observe the existent differences in performing this test between students approved by the social quotas system and without it. The corpus of this research is constituted by 122 essays, being 40 from the approved students in Dentistry, 40 from the approved students in Civil Engineering and 42 from the approved students in Medicine. These three courses are, historically, the ones that present highest competition in the university entrance examination in the campus of Cascavel - Unioeste. The presentation and following analysis of the data related to both groups of students produced different thoughts about the presupposition in which the quotas system is justified: the one that students come from public schools would have more difficulties in getting a good performance in the essay test in the university entrance examination. KEYWORDS: university entrance examination, essay test, quotas system.
