Abstract

An inadequate built environment may cause a consequent distance between the designer, users and their act ivities during the design process. Adopting a participative approach based on the Post-occupancy Evaluation (POE) and on the Work Ergonomic Analysis (EWA) is a way to approximate actors. The objective of this article is to show that POE and EWA can bring distinctive and complementary contributions to the analysis of a built environment. A case study carried out for an already completed scientific initiation research work is presented. That work is a qualitative research, a case study with exploratory purposes. The adopted instruments to accomplish the POE were: Wish poems, Visual cues and a questionnaire. This multi-method approach helps to confirm some information or enlarge the set of relevant information from the user's point-of-view. Regarding the EWA, observations, interviews and validations were made considering the activity. The first group of instruments emphasizes the needs of users, while the second group highlights the different demands of those activities. The analysis results show that a built environment is not always perceived and adjusted by the same way by users: professors and students. The POE instruments allowed systematizing several opinions on esthetic, functional and behavioral aspects. The EWA allowed understanding and explaining divergences via an activity carried
