Abstract
Studies reveal the growth of female participation in the labor market worldwide over the last few years. The IBGE data show a high growth in the female employed population throughout Brazil. Women's entry into the labor market is related to factors such as cost of living, salary and level of education. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the participation of women in the labor market from 2002 to 2018 in the metropolitan regions of Salvador and Recife. Secondary data from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica (IBGE), Instituto de Pesquisa Economica Aplicada (IPEA), Banco Central do Brasil (BCB), Departamento Intersindical de Estatistica e Estudos Socioeconomicos (DIEESE) e Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anisio Teixeira (INEP). Multiple regression models were adjusted by the ordinary least squares method. It was found that in these regions, the female employed population grew at higher rates than the male and female graduating variables in higher education in Brazil, the unemployment rate in the country and the minimum wage are the main variables to explain female participation in the market in these Brazilian metropolitan regions.
