Abstract
High-density compacts of rapidly quenched NdFeB ribbon flakes (MQI, supplied by General Motors) have been produced by rotary forging. It was found that under certain conditions an enhanced magnetization was produced in the axial direction of rotary forging. This effect can be correlated with the density of the compacts, although the mechanism by which it occurs has not been established. The increased magnetic properties were coupled with changes in thermal expansion behaviour and differential thermal analysis revealed the presence of some amorphous material in the high-density rotary forged compacts. The best maximum energy product achieved was 230 kJ/m 3.
