Abstract
The paper presents a formulation of photelasticity equations for composite materials by using the refraction tensor. In the derivation a clear distinction is maintained between optical behaviour and elastic behaviour. Discussed in detail are the additive property of refraction tensor, analysis of residual fringes, derivation of stress-proportioning models, and symmetry of stress- and strain-optic relations for composites.
