Abstract

Closed-cell aluminum foams were prepared by molten body transitional foaming process. The anisotropic damping property of closed-cell aluminum foam was measured in two directions using the forced vibration method. The measured results show that the loss factors of the TD specimens are higher than that of the LD specimens. The loss factors ratio β L / β T depends linearly on the shape-anisotropy ratio R. Anisotropic damping behavior is due to the variation of Young’s modulus resulting from anisotropic cell morphology.
