Abstract

It has been shown that micro-crystalline coatings of Ni-Cr-Al alloys possess better oxidation resistance than the as-cast alloys. Anisothermal oxidation testing was first used by Kofstad to determine the activation energy oxidation of metals. This method can also be used to determine the temperature ranges in which different rate laws could be applied. The present work uses continuous heating to perform anisothermal oxidation tests. The activation energy for oxidation of Ni-20Cr-5Al alloy coatings was determined, and the oxidation mechanism was studied to gain a better understanding of oxidation behavior of micro-crystalline alloys.
