Abstract

According to modern authors (e.g. Troupin 1949), the genus Anisocycla comprises seven species. Four species occur in the Guineo-Congolian Region (sensu White 1976) from Liberia to Cameroun and Zaire. One species occurs in the Zambesian Region in S Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and two species occur on Madagascar. The present collections from eastern Tanzania are the first of the genus from East Africa. They are indistinguishable from the Zambesian A. blepharosepala on characters of the male flowers (Troupin 1960, t. 18) while the leaves are very different. Female flowers and fruits have not been seen. The two taxa are undoubtedly closely related, but a final evaluation of their mutual relationship must await the collection of female flowers and fruits. As long as the only demonstrated differences between the two taxa are found in the leaves, I prefer to treat them as subspecies although the distribution areas are very disjunct. There is approximately 1500 kms from the southernmost locality of subsp. tanzaniensis to the northernmost locality of subsp. blepharosepala. Examination of herbarium material at Kew has shown that this taxon is
