Abstract

Small chromosomal deletions may escape detection even when new chromosomal banding techniques are employed. Through the use of a high-resolution microscope scanning system coupled to a computer, a small deletion on chromosome 8 has been detected in a child with aniridia/Wilms' tumor. The deletion apparently occurred during translocation from chromosome 11 to chromosome 8. Detection of the deletion raises the question: are there critical genetic loci within or near the missing segment of chromosome 8 that account for the development of the neoplasm and its associated malformations? Study of additional cases is required to resolve this question (Ladda, R., et al., Science, 185:784, 1974).
