Abstract

AbstractBlock copolymers of styrene‐acrylonitrile were prepared by adding acrylonitrile to a living polymer of styrene. Different block copolymers were made, using living polystyrene of different molecular weights. Homopolystyrene was separated by extraction and no homopolymer of acrylonitrile was found. Intrinsic viscosities and turbidity values of block copolymers were determined. It was also found that acrylonitrile did not yield living polymer. A mechanism of chain termination was proposed.
