Abstract

This essay considers three works from the 1990’s, by a theologian (Tat’iana Goricheva), a writer of fiction (Petr Aleshkovskii), and a documentary journalist (Svetlana Aleksievich), looking in particular at how these writers reflect on the relationship between humans and animals in light of environmental crisis. The essay situates their work within cultural and environmental contexts (Russian Orthodoxy, folk narrative, chernukha, the Chernobyl disaster), and offers commentary on how these three writers affirm an ethic of responsibility that insists on the inherent worth of both animal and human lives.
