Abstract

Activists promoting humane policies are having an impact on animal agriculture in the United States. A guide for the care and use of agricultural animals in agricultural research and teaching is being prepared for publication; an Animal Welfare Information Center has been established in the National Agricultural Library; and agricultural organizations are exploring ways to increase research on farm animal welfare. More research on farm animal welfare is needed, in part because of the potential harm to the animals that might be caused by unsound regulations. Hardwick's “welfare plateau” is an aid to accommodating both animal welfare and production economics in the design of animal production systems. Basic and applied research on farm animal welfare should be supported by all who want to engender the highest possible level of well-being in farm animals.
