Morrison provides many examples involving research, pets, farming, and hunting. He tackles each area with many examples and describes a balanced view of both sides of the animal rights issue. The author is a veterinarian who obviously loves animals, but he is also a well-known REM sleep researcher who appreciates the humane use of animals for research purposes. He describes his own harrowing experience of having his lab trashed and his neighbors given false information about his work by animal rights extremists. Morrison describes why he wrote this book in the introduction: ‘Out of these experiences arose my desire to tell a story about the animal rights issue – a story that will go beyond the animal welfare debate of the past few decades to explore human beings' long-term and complex relationships with animals.’ He definitely succeeds...
