Abstract

‘Dassie bacilli’, isolated from the Cape hydrax have been shown to possess only slight virulence toward voles and mice. Given intraperitoneally or intravenously into mice, dassie bacilli, provoke splenic hyperplasia. Guinea pigs vaccinated with the dassie bacillus developed tuberculin sensitivity, associated with appreciable immunity when challenged with Mycobacterium bovis. In rabbit macrophages, dassie bacilli multiply slowly.
