Abstract

A procedure for obtaining an angular momentum projected space-spin basis for multishell configurations (j1N1 j2N2...jkNk) of nucleons in a specified isospin state (N, T) is outlined. The scheme is based on generating the tensor basis spanning such an irreducible representation of the unitary group adapted to the non-canonical subgroup U(n1)(X)...(X)U(nk) using the basis spanning skew representations of U(ni). It is found that this procedure requires only the coupling of the angular momenta Ji, Mi of jiNi occurring in j1N1 j2N2...jkNk to yield J,M.
