Abstract

AbstractSpin‐orbit and electron exchange effects may be identified separately through the observation of “integrated” Stokes parameters of the radiation from excited states after impact by spin‐polarized electrons. The principles underpinning the measurements and the techniques are described. Stokes parameters within 2.5 eV of thresh old are discussed for selected excited states of inert gas atoms. The combined effects of electron exchange and the internal spin‐orbit inter action play a significant role in the excitations of the J = 1 and 2 intermediately‐coupled states while electron exchange is the mechanism for the excitation of the J = 3 well LS‐coupled states.
