Abstract

Fission cross sections have been measured for the $^{58}$Ni${+\mathrm{}}^{124}$Sn system at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier. Using the sensitivity of the fission yield to the high angular momentum partial fusion cross sections, various compound nucleus angular momentum distributions have been tested for the $^{58}$Ni${+\mathrm{}}^{124}$Sn and $^{64}$Ni${+\mathrm{}}^{118}$Sn systems. For these systems, the calculated fission cross sections using the very wide angular momentum distributions predicted by the elastic fusion model of Udagawa, Kim, and Tamura are in good agreement with the experimental data.
