Abstract

The angular distributions of deuterons from the reaction 6Li( 12C, d) 16O ∗ leading to the ground state and the first eight excited states of 16O have been measured at a c.m. energy of 7 MeV. The angular distributions of deuterons leading to the 3rd, 4th and 5th excited states have also been measured at 8 MeV, and excitation functions for these levels have been taken from 6 to 8 MeV at θ lab = 30° and 50°. The results have been analysed by estimating the contribution to the total cross section, due to the formation and decay of the compound nucleus in a statistical region of excitation, by means of a Hauser-Feshbach calculation. This contribution is then subtracted from the measured total cross sections, neglecting any interference effects. The difference is used to obtain reduced alpha widths for 7 levels in 16O including the 7.12 MeV level which is of significance for the helium burning in stars.
