Abstract

The spectral distribution of internal bremsstrahlung emitted in the β-decay of 32P, 90Y, 204Tl and 210Bi has been measured at seven values of the angle between the electron and the photon. At angles greater than 45° the agreement between experiment and the Coulomb-corrected theory is good for 32P and satisfactory for 210Bi. For 90Y and 204Tl the measured yields are subtantially in excess of those predicted theoretically. However, for 204Tl at least, the agreement is significantly improved when the theory is modified to take account of detour transitions according to the prescription of Ford and Martin. The intensity of internal bremsstrahlung at the high-energy limit is considerably in excess of all theoretical predictions for 90Y, 204Tl and 210Bi. This effect is probably a result of the neglect of the second and higher order Coulomb terms in the theory.
