Abstract

Abstract An equation is derived which can be used to determine the distribution in solid angle of “trapped” light in rectangular scintillation counters, for purposes of calculating attenuation factors for this proportion of scintillation light. The use of the equation is illustrated for three systems in which the critical angle for total internal reflection is less than, equal to and greater than π 4 . The value of the equation as an aid to the design of large rectangular scintillation counters is discussed.
