Abstract

It is generally accepted that Portugal was a leader of what is termed “The Golden Age of Exploration.” One wonders how Portugal, which controlled little territory on the European Continent and had a small population, was able to become a powerful force. During the course of the Reconquista, the kingdom of Castile had absorbed the lion’s share of the territory on the Iberian Peninsula, which left Portugal with only a thin strip of territory along the Atlantic coast. Yet by 1500, the Portuguese trade empire reached the Far East and would reach Japan in the 1540s.KeywordsCommercial RelationEnglish TradeForeign ShipEnglish ShipHenry VersusThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
