Abstract

Angioleiomyoma is a benign neoplasm originating from smooth muscleS that rarely occur in the mouth. A 36-year-old female sought treatment presenting a 2cm soft submucosal nodule of slow growth in the buccal mucosa with a 5-year duration and a clinical hypothesis of a hyperplastic lymph node. A well-defined mass associated with an artery was found after the ultrasound examination, and an excisional biopsy was performed. Macroscopically, three to four cavities were observed after the hemisection of the lesion. Microscopic examination demonstrated numerous interconnected blood vessels of various sizes and calibers, with thick smooth muscle walls (HHF-35+), and the final diagnosis was angioleiomyoma. The patient was followed up for 7 months, with no signs of recurrence. Angioleiomyoma has clinical features similar to other common lesions, and although Doppler ultrasonography may help in the diagnosis and avoid difficulties during surgery, the biopsy is necessary for the final diagnosis.
