Abstract

Wackenheim, JP Braun. Price, $27. Pp 154, with 128 illustrations. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1970. This monograph is divided into four sections. The first is a review of previous publications of the "Vessels in the Region of the Mesencephalon" between 1940 and 1968. This is followed by a section devoted to the normal anatomy of the vascular channels in this region and one devoted to a description of the vascular angiographic changes due to tumors in the region of the mesencephalon. The angiographic changes of tumors of the pineal region, of the posterior thalamus, and of the cerebral peduncles are particularly well treated. Other entities such as ependymomas of the third ventricle, tentorial meningiomas, and hydrocephalus are less well covered. The concluding section, which covers more than 100 pages, is a series of examples and diagrams illustrating the normal and pathological anatomy of the region. There are 128 excellent, well labeled, illustrations. The authors have used subtraction techniques and artists tracings to illustrate a variety of points, and multiple photographs of anatomical specimens are included. The description of the angiographie changes due to various lesions is clear and accurately illustrated. This volume succeeds in collecting the per¬ tinent information on a subject which is not generally well defined nor fully described in most texts. It brings together information which can be found only in scattered publi¬ cations. The book is highly recommended for all those whose primary interests are in cere¬ bral angiography. It is also of use to the clinician, who in addition to diagnosis, is involved in planning an operative approach to lesions in this area. Sadek K. Hilal, MD, PhD
