Abstract
The concentration of burned patients at Brooke General Hospital has afforded the opportunity to evaluate the factors influencing the choice of anesthesia and its effect upon patients. Each phase of postburn recovery has been described in terms of physical condition ot the patient. The requirements of surgical procedures and the respiratory and circulatory demands have been discussed, with special emphasis on problems directly related to the airway, myocardium and metabolism. The role of the anesthesiologist is defined in terms of total care of the patient during each phase or type of treatment. Finally, an approach to the anesthetic management of the burned patient, based on physiologic and pathologic changes, has been formulated and found to be applicable to most patients.
