Abstract

This thesis attempts to discuss Andy Warhol in following aspects: Why did he turn from abstractionist art into pop art; and what were the factors that influenced his painting style? Whether art and commerce separately have meanings for him; and how did he think of the issue of the commercialization of art? To understand the transformation of his painting style, this thesis takes notice of the impact of his living environment in his childhood and the mental residuals made by the disease during his puerility. In a society with prosperous Popular culture, Andy Warhol had a specific aspiration to printing, which makes arts spread; and with this premise, he started to connect his painting style with printing skills such as silk-screening at a certain degree, like machine-made massive copies, which demonstrated the effect of printing and the artistry of Pop art. Since 1963, he devoted himself to cinematic business. This thesis also discusses what films meant to him and the importance of films in the development of his art business. With an objective viewpoint of people, there is an attempt to discuss Andy Warhol’s role in “silver factory” and how he used the factory to promote his art business; with Andy Warhol’s judgment on art and the reasons that his business art, there is an attempt to find out his own interpretation of commercial art. Finally, with the theory of Frankfurt School, goes further to bring up introspection and critique.
