Abstract
Looking back can help you look forwards. Andrew Scull has spent a scholarly lifetime unpicking changing perspectives on psychiatry and mental illness: “for me it was always intriguing to think about how societies dealt with and conceived of mental disturbance”. He is now Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego (CA, USA), and the latest of Scull's many books, Desperate Remedies (2022), explores the tumultuous journey of psychiatry in the USA over the past 200 years.
